The Sametime Unyte presentation includes video and audio, by the way.

The IBM Domino Health Check
Is your Domino enterprise healthy? Tim Speed will review a formal method to analyze your Domino enterprise. This presentation will discuss tools and techniques to evaluate the 'health' of any Domino environment. As a bonus this presentation will also illustrate how you can automate a systemic 'health check' using Domino DDM. The material in this presentation is based on a large number of enterprise heath checks conducted by ISSL at several customer sites. Tim will also share with you some sample findings and also share many of our best practices on keeping your Domino enterprise on-line and healthy.

Executing a security assessment of your Domino architecture
Tim will walk you though a comprehensive security assessment for a Domino architecture. This assessment will include a review of your Domino directory, Notes.ini, ACLs, and ECLs. IBM will also share many examples of best practices and common practices - though a common practice is not always a best practice. Tim will also provide many take always, including tools and techniques on show YOU can assess your environment. Finally Tim will share many examples and 'war' stories on common Domino security configuration mistakes.

Using Desktop Policy to push Notes.ini settings does not work on 8.0.1 Lite

I've been using Jack Dausman awesome tip from four years ago to put a Notes.ini setting into the Desktop policy.

The above code uses the Trim() function. Trim() doesn't remove redundant spaces between words, so the result is that my name has two spaces between my first name and last name, like this: "Michael Sobczak". Here's the formula version of the same code:

pre := "";
fst := "Michael";
mdl := "";
lst := "Sobczak";
suf := "";
username := @Trim(pre + " " + fst + " " + mdl + " " + lst + " " + suf);
@Return ( username );

The @Trim() function removes all redundant spaces between words. So now my name has only one space between my first name and last name, like this: "Michael Sobczak" Why is this a big deal? Well, the form in question logs individual field changes to the document history section. When the above formula runs in the Input Translation event, the username is recomputed and the form sees the field value as having changed and logs the change. So the only solution I can think of is to run some cleanup code against all of the existing documents to fix the original problem introduced by Trim(). If only the original Lotusscript code had used FullTrim()...

Is there money to be made with open source Notes solutions?

The company I currently work for is considering making one of our applications available as an open source solution on OpenNTF. Our thinking is that we would be able to make money like other open source solutions, primarily through support, ...
<dc:subject>OpenNTF</dc:subject>

The company I currently work for is considering making one of our applications available as an open source solution on OpenNTF. Our thinking is that we would be able to make money like other open source solutions, primarily through support, customizations and maintenance.

The database has a scheduled agent (running hourly) that unlocks documents that have locked for more than two hours. However, if the agent unlocks a document while a user is still editing it, the user gets the Another copy of this document was saved while you were editing it warning when they attempt to save their document.

A way around this would be for the agent to determine if anyone has the document open in edit mode before unlocking it. The Domino server knows who's editing a document on the server at all times, and gives users the soft locking prompt when someone else tries to edit the same document in the Notes UI:

The last time the DNP hosted a remote presentation was back on March 16, 1999 at the Data Planners office in Southfield. That presentation was for a product called Y2K-OK, delivered by Francois Koutchouk of Atlantic Decisions. (Wow, that was a long time ago.)

I personally have always preferred in-person presentations, but I decided to give remote presentations another try for two reasons: Tim Speed and the material. I'll be very interested to see what the interest level is in the Notes community in Michigan for these presentations. If the response is positive, then I can easily see us giving more remote presentations in the future...

Aces! Since I also aced the Notes 6 Application Development Update exam four years ago, I now need to keep this streak of perfection going when I take the Notes 8 App Dev Update exam next year.

Why next year? Well, I essentially spent the last month and a half preparing for this exam, and I need a break. I also need to spend time on some other projects that have been on hold until I crossed off this item from my to do list.

To prep for this exam, I purchased the practice test from Self Test Software. I printed out all of the Flash Cards (except for those pertaining to DB2) and went through them several times. I also printed out the What's new in Domino Designer 7? documentation in the Lotus Domino Designer Help file and read that several times. Of all the new development topics, the ones that were hardest for me to retain were the new DXL methods and properties (CreateElementNodeNS, SetElementNodeNS...ugh!) and the elements in a WSDL file (<service>, <portType>, <binding>, etc.) I spent most of my time this week reviewing those topics to make sure I had them nailed down.
