Back in 1995, while I was working for EDS as a consultant for Chevrolet, I received a laminated card with the following graph:



For some reason, I kept this card and remembered it whenever I'm trying to do something new on a project. When the Dark Night of the Innovator inevitably hits, I remind myself that I've always been able to get whatever it is I'm trying to do to work eventually, even at the eleventh hour...or the twelfth hour...and then things eventually start to work, and all is right in the world once more.

I remembered this graph a few months ago when a former co-worker of mine told me during lunch how difficult it had been making the switch from Notes/Domino development to object-oriented programming in Java. She's very bright, and I knew that eventually the light bulb would turn on for her. Just in case it hadn't, I called her a few weeks ago asking if she'd be interested in a Notes/Domino job. As it turned out, she'd seen the light with object-oriented programming and isn't looking back. While I certainly would have liked having her work with me at my new job, I'm definitely happy for her that she was able to make the leap!
