Not to defend Americans' laziness, but the people on their way to the gym are stepping up the escalator. They save a bit of time that way, though the choice to put an escalator there was quite probably stupid.

crazy! i recognize that last picture! it's in point loma, in san diego. there is actually a whole cluster of stores on the left and right hand side of the 24 hour fitness, so it sort of makes sense to have the escalator for all the shoppers :)
but i've definitely taken the escalator before working out at that gym... its a pretty sweet way to start your workout... haha. america, fuck yeah!

Perhaps the elevator at 24Hr is a necessity because of laws protecting the needs of the handicaped. There are many who go to the gym that have knee, hip, COPD issues etc. which make climbing steps difficult or impossible.

I used the elevator at a gym here in Washington.
Why? Because I was going to physical therapy to fix my broken foot. If I had been able to walk up the stairs myself, I wouldn't have needed to go there in the first place!

Yes, Hawaii is in America, but is still a group of Pacific Islands much less 'americanized" than other parts of this country.

I admit, the sequence is very funny, but remember that many people using a fitness center are there for physical therapy and may not be capable of climbing stairs.

I live near that gym with the escalator - Hilarious picture but nobody who posts it mentions that the gym leases the corner of a large outdoor shopping center that has escalators in every corner ...

Regarding the fitness escalator- my guess is they designed and built the plaza then later the fitness center moved in. Clearly a case of not anticipating the clientele, not really that lazy. Just sayin. But too many Americans generally are, so I can't fault you the interpretation.
