PermaLink How the Notes client resolves database links08/12/2009 07:47 PM
None
I currently work for a client that has employed a distributed Domino infrastructure. Databases typically reside on up to twenty servers. Unfortunately, whenever specific users click on a doclink to a database they've never accessed before, they end up with an icon on the first server listed alphabetically in the domain.

Several Domino administrators I've worked with in the past explained to me what was happening, but I'd never seen any official documentation on this. So, I spent a decent amount of time today looking for documentation on this particular facet of Notes/Domino.  Thankfully, someone JY Riverin in the Notes 8.5 Discussion forum pointed me in the right direction:

How does Notes determine which replica to use with @Command([FileOpenDBRepID]) or a database link?

What's even more interesting is that the Designer Help doco for the FileOpenDBRepID @Command, makes no mention of the Catalog/domain search server setting in the Location document, or that the Domain Catalog comes into play.

Now that I have an official technote, I will be working with my client to possibly use policies to remedy this situation. Why the information in the above technote hasn't been incorporated into the Help databases is inconceivable!

it does seem a somewhat daft scheme - I have written some code to warn users if they go to an inappropriate server

I resolved this problem by correcting (?) the ACL on the servers database catalogs. The problem was caused because LocalDomainServers had manager access in the database catalog.

We have a hub and spoke topology, the spoke/local site servers have manager access to their own catalog.nsf whilst other servers have only reader access, this ensures that only local server databases are listed in the local catalog. So when the Notes client looks up in the catalog it will only ever see an entry for the local server and opens that database.

If you look at the ACL of the template for a catalog you will see an entry for [LocalDomainServers] with access level of "Reader". This suggests that this is the default and intended ACL setup for catalogs.
